      Dan Heil

Like most people, independence is everything to Dan Heil, a 53-year-old resident of Galloway, Ohio. “It prevents me from having to rely on people for everything and that gives me peace of mind,” Dan says.

On Nov. 4, 2013, Dan, suffered a stroke. His independence was in jeopardy. After being discharged from the acute care hospital, Dan began inpatient rehabilitation at OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital. When he checked in, he was unable to walk and the idea of regaining his independence was very much in question.

After four weeks of inpatient rehabilitation, Dan was able to walk with the aid of a cane and, on Thanksgiving Day, he was discharged and returned home. During his stay at OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital, Dan’s medical team and dedicated rehabilitation specialists helped him relearn the skills that assist him in his daily activities. He is able to walk for short periods of times without his cane. And, with the help of a modified car, he can drive. Dan’s independence is back, and he continues to see improvements every week.

“Everything I do, whether it’s walking, driving, exercising or even just dressing myself, is the result of someone from OhioHealth helping me learn how to do it again,” Dan says.
